Steampunk book Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld Synopsis: In 1914, an alternative war is brewing in Europe. The arch duke has been assassinated and his son Alek must master the walker form of the clankers as he prepares for war against Derryn Sharp, a girl in the British Royal Army and a member of the Darwinists.

The overall theme of the book is steampunk, but the book has a coming-of-age subplot for both of the main characters, an epic fantasy for Alec, and a tinge of sci-fi as the Darwinists control cross bred, genetically altered "beasties" as their war machines.

This novel has to be the pinnacle, all encumbering masterpiece of steampunk to date getting all the elements right.

You may know Scott Westerfeld from his very different Uglies series. This book is written in a completely different style, but what sets Westerfield apart is his ability to put you right their especially with his colloquial dialogue, and vivid description. My favorite phrase has to be "barking spiders", but there are others that will make you laugh out loud.

The novel gets my highest rating and is recommended to all.

The History Of Cyber Punk

An interesting documentary I found about the beginnings of cyber punk and this sub genre of science fiction. It includes interviews with Neil Gibson and Neal Stephenson, authors of the first novels in the genre. It covers how they come up with the ideas, what their influences were, and what cyberpunk means for future generations. Includes great cover shots of many different novels including one I hadn't read yet called Terraplane. Information of how cyber punk isn't just science fiction but an introspection of where technology is going, and the cyber subculture of computer hackers, bio-integration, and robot uprisings may really affect us in the near future. It's in German, but you can get the gist of it, and the authors are speaking in English, so its easy to follow.

How To Make Steampunk Goggles

Want to learn how to make steampunk goggles? It is easy with this easy to follow how to tutorial by Windfire Designs. What you need is leather, non prescription round lenses, a bra strap and elastic clasp, wire, and a sewing machine. The steps include the following:

First, get your materials together
Draw a pattern of the design. If you are having trouble basically you will need a sewed strip to wrap around the lenses, strap for the sides to attach to the elastic bra strap, and a semi-circle shape to attach to the strip holding the lenses in.
Cut out the design in the leather
Sew a double thick leather strap that the lenses will fit in
Glue the lenses in
Sew together all pieces
Dye(optional)
Wear, and make crazy steam inventions

Choreographed Cyber Punk Dance With Techno Track Video

A rare find of a video choreographed of Duval's vision of a cyber punk, more in the sense of a modern day punk, graffiti artist. I like the video because it encompasses modern themes such as urban artists, dancing and a mellow but good techno track. Only 85 people have viewed the video but I hope more will. I especially like the part where the guy starts dancing, because he has good moves. This video is simply dubbed "Cyber-punk" which fits. Let us know what you think.

Advances in technology are zooming in this 18th century age of steam and mechanical engineering. Brushing up on some green mint tea(to soothe my ulcer), I observed a man communicating into a box shaped device. After some observations(taking furious notes so I might remit them to this news journal, for you the valued reader), observed the man using a sort of punch card in this talk device, waiting a few minutes, and conversing in hushed tones like one would to a lover in quiet corners. I did observe a few notes of his conversation of words such as "phone", "tesla", punch cards, and complaining continuously of a dropped connection or using up all his minutes.

I asked the gentleman on his way out what the device was, and he said it was an Apple Steampunk Cell Phone which he purchased at the new technology store on Wedenborough and Langley Street next to the magick shop. I ran over there to find this place not to exist.

I heard a ringing noise, and in the gutter was one of these crazy talking devices. I picked it up, and placed it to my ear as I had observed the gentleman do so.

"Welcome to technology of the 21st Century Mister Campbell..." and then there was a dose of static ruckous on the other end.

Cyber Punk Cartoon Lithium by fusion animation

Here's a video I thought all you cyber punk fans might like. The 3D animation is a little old, but over all the story looks solid, and it gets bonus points for being set in a futuristic cyberpunk city. The movie is called Lithium and was created by Fusion Animation as a pitch for a video game series or tv animation. What I like about it is its comic book feel, and the idea of creatures going around murdering other creatures to harvest their energy.

I also like the gritty crime noir feeling that works in this setting and I haven't seen too much. Anyway, check it out and let me know what you think.

A montage mashup of 8 minutes worth of cyber punk video clips for watching. Includes shots from Matrix, animes, and more. This schizophrenic rollercoaster will send your oraculars into overdrive as you watch cyberpunk clips from the greatest masters in this genre. I especially like the part where the ghost in the shell takes care of the robot. I was impressed and had forgot about that clip from the movie. Some of my all time favorite movie scenes popped up in this movie.

It's a pleasure to watch with a great techno soundtrack, and the visuals are amazing. If you appreciate cyber punkage you will like this. Check it out!

Cyberpunk Nemesis trailer

The 1980s cyber punk movie Nemesis starring Olivier Gruner has many of the elements you see in newer movies. An all out adrenaline punched show it will remind you of the Matrix, Rambo, Terminator, and any Chuck Norris movie. It sounds like a crazy combination, but the movie will blow you away. Not only how much Hollywood has taken in newer movies, but how revolutionary it was for the time. This is based on Albert Pyun's screenplay and direction.

A star cast and action that is not only nostalgic, but still good compared to today's standards. Check it out, and I also recommend Nemesis: Nebula that came out in 1994. You will enjoy!

Howl’s Moving Castle Steampunk Film Review

What I love about Anime is the Japanese are willing to take more artistic risks with films. Howl's moving castle is one steampunk film that succeeds with these risks. In this film the great steampunk elements include the Moving Castle itself which is one big steam powered construct that has magic elements that allow it to move forward or backward in time and travel wherever it wants. Created by the famous Hyao Miazaki, the English dubbed version lends for great voiceover work with stars like Christian Bale and Jean Simmons!

The story is solid, not mindblowing, but good. The visual aspect is stunning. All the creative hand drawn artwork and creative machines and constructs in a wonderland like London makes for a great film. Don't believe me, check out this film review by Ebert and Roeper.
