Steampunk book Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld Synopsis:  In 1914, an alternative war is brewing in Europe.  The arch duke has been assassinated and his son Alek must master the walker form of the clankers as he prepares for war against Derryn Sharp, a girl in the British Royal Army and a member of the Darwinists.

The overall theme of the book is steampunk, but the book has a coming-of-age subplot for both of the main characters, an epic fantasy for Alec, and a tinge of sci-fi as the Darwinists control cross bred, genetically altered "beasties" as their war machines.

This novel has to be the pinnacle, all encumbering masterpiece of steampunk to date getting all the elements right.

You may know Scott Westerfeld from his very different Uglies series.  This book is written in a completely different style, but what sets Westerfield apart is his ability to put you right their especially with his colloquial dialogue, and vivid description.  My favorite phrase has to be "barking spiders", but there are others that will make you laugh out loud.

The novel gets my highest rating and is recommended to all.
